SEVEN

The dawn broke pearl gray and storm free. Cate slipped quietly from the bed, leaving Noah still asleep, his long, bronze limbs tangled in the sheets, his hard, muscular body at rest, his face half buried in a pillow. They had spent a spectacular night together, their lovemaking as electric and fiery as the storm that had come before it.

He hadn’t been able to get enough of her, taking her time and again, her desperation for him equaling his for her. But the storm was over now, and a new day had appeared. She needed to get away from Noah, even if only for a while; she needed some emotional distance between her and what had happened between them in the night.

She made her way out of his bedroom and back to hers, where she took a shower, then dressed in taupe-colored slacks and a white cotton T-shirt with a scoop neck. Outside, she discovered that the storm had left the air cool, crisp, and clean.

The beach was her first choice, but the sun hadn’t been up long enough to dry the sand. So with her camera in hand she strolled down the lawn to the terrace that skirted the edge of a small bluff and overlooked the ocean. Elegant old-fashioned wooden chairs filled with bright red cushions had been placed around a glass-and-wood table. She chose a chair and was grateful to find the cushion dry. Apparently the members of Noah’s staff were even earlier risers than she.

The storm had dominated during the night, but with its passing the beach life had resumed. Three sandpipers braved the foam that curled in lacy patterns onto the sand, and gulls glided overhead on gentle air currents.

She studied them, wondering if one of them was the gull she had seen the previous day, the one whose predicament had reminded her so much of hers. She raised the camera and focused first on one, then on another, until she found a gull that caused her to stay with it. She wasn’t certain why, but she thought she detected a certain valor in the way it soared against the blue sky, and she pressed the shutter button several times, capturing an “after” shot of a gull that had survived a storm and won its reward of a peaceful sky.

With a sigh she lowered the camera. The sky was clear. The sun was bright. A dream had come true last night. She and Noah had joined together in the most intimate way a man and woman could. She should feel on top of the world. So why did she still feel so uneasy?

“You brought your camera down here?”

She turned her head to see Noah, who was standing a few feet to her left, two cups of steaming coffee in his hands, hard, assured, and vitally attractive. It was impossible not to smile at him. So much for a chance to gain perspective, she thought wryly. “It’s sort of a habit to have it in my hand.
